Knee Injuries Greatly Increase the Development of Arthritis

Herr & Low has represented injured people for over 30 years and that long view informs what we do. We know, from clients who have kept in touch or returned to see us later, that an injury to a joint will cause problems down the road. A report in the New York Times now gives us medical research to back up what we know from experience: knee surgeries (meniscal tears, torn ACLs, etc.) greatly increase the incidence of arthritis later in life.

Findings from Dr. Mininder Kocher

As reported by the Times, Dr. Mininder Kocher, Associate Director, Sports Medicine Division; Professor of Orthopedic Surgery, Harvard Medical School has concluded that the chance of developing arthritis after tearing a tendon or ligament in the knee is over 50% within 10 years. The only other long-term study, from Norway, came to a similar conclusion.

Dr. Kocher’s paper is not yet published but we will be following closely so that we can use his science to advance our client’s interests and secure the full compensation they deserve – not just for what has happened today, but what will happen tomorrow.
